Bofors was founded in 1646 and is therefore one of the oldest, still operating companies in Sweden. It started as a forge and iron mill. In 1883 the first gun was manufactured for the Swedish army. In 1894 Bofors was acquired by Alfred Nobel, and he expanded the business into propellant and explosives manufacturing.

Bofors operates globally with customers all over the world. Southeast Asia and Indonesia has been, and still are, a very important market. Through the years, more than a hundred guns has bees sold to Indonesia.

Since 2005 Bofors has been a part of the BAE Systems. BAE Systems is one of the world's largest defence industry groups with more than 100,000 employees around the world.
