HMS GLADAN hosts America 250 celebrations in New Orleans

Sweden has long been connected to the United States through trade, shipping, and diplomacy. In the early days of transatlantic commerce, Sweden played an active role in the growth of New Orleans as a gateway city, helping shape its position as a hub for international exchange. That relationship continues today, with Swedish companies investing, creating jobs, and strengthening economic ties across Louisiana and the Gulf South.

New Orleans will once again take center stage as the first stop in a nationwide celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary, welcoming tall ships from around the world to the Port of New Orleans. Sail250 will be the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships, creating a striking nautical spectacle along the historic Mississippi River. The flotilla will be accompanied by a wide range of events, festivals, and cultural programming across the region, designed to educate, entertain, and engage communities from across the country.

Among the participating vessels is the Swedish Navy topsail schooner HMS GLADAN, which will serve as the venue for several events during the celebrations. Built in 1947, GLADAN is one of two sail training ships operated by the Swedish Navy and is modeled after the traditional Baltic pilot style. She provides cadets with hands-on experience in seamanship, navigation, and leadership through training voyages around the world.
