HMS GLADAN hosts America 250 celebrations in Norfolk, VA
June 19-23, 2026

Norfolk is an official port of Sail250®, a global gathering of tall ships and military ships to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States. For ten days in June, 10,000 officers, cadets, and crews of more than 60 ships from 20 nations will engage with residents and visitors across the Chesapeake Bay region in events and programs symbolic of the bonds of international goodwill.

Among the participating vessels is the Swedish Navy topsail schooner HMS GLADAN, which will serve as the venue for several events during the celebrations. Embassy of Sweden, will among other things, host a Midsummer celebration aboard the ship. GLADAN, built in 1947,  is one of two sail training ships operated by the Swedish Navy and is modeled after the traditional Baltic pilot style. It sails with naval cadets, undertaking seamanship, navigation, and leadership training during voyages throughout the world while cadets face the challenges of heavy weather and real-world situations at sea.

Additional official port stops for GLADAN during Sail250® include Galveston, New Orleans, New York City and Boston.
