As two like-minded nations with a long-standing partnership in innovation, Sweden and Canada are uniquely positioned to deepen collaboration in today’s increasingly complex global landscape.
Sweden Canada Innovation Days (SCID) is the flagship annual event of the Sweden Canada Innovation Initiative (SCII), a collaborative network of government and industry partners, locally administered by Business Sweden and funded by Vinnova and the Swedish Energy Agency, dedicated to advancing innovation and co-creation between Sweden and Canada.
The initiative began in 2018 with a small but pivotal innovation seminar in Montréal, organized by Vinnova, Business Sweden, and the Embassy of Sweden, and supported by leading Swedish companies including Saab, Ericsson, Volvo, and ABB. The overwhelmingly positive response led to the official launch of the initiative in 2019, with the inaugural Sweden Canada Innovation Days bringing together leaders from industry, academia, and government to focus on autonomous systems, mining, forestry, and the power of cross-sector matchmaking.
Now in its fifth edition, Sweden Canada Innovation Days has grown into a cornerstone event for the innovation communities of both countries. Each year, the event has expanded in scope and ambition—bringing together a diverse mix of startups, established companies, researchers, and policymakers, serving as a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange, matchmaking, and the launch of new collaborative projects.
Each year, Sweden Canada Innovation Days revolves around the core theme of “Driving the Green Transition,” ensuring every edition spotlights the urgent need for sustainable innovation and climate action. The event typically alternates between Toronto and Montréal, reflecting the strong ties across Canada’s innovation hubs. With annually rotating spotlight sectors, the program highlights timely challenges, successes, and opportunities in industries where Sweden and Canada share unique synergies—continually bringing new perspectives and showcasing the depth of expertise and partnership potential.
Sweden Canada Innovation Days 2025 will be hosted in Ottawa—the heart of Canada’s policy, defence, and technology ecosystem. This year’s focus on defence & security, electrification, and advanced technology reflects both the strategic priorities of the host city and the evolving relationship between Sweden and Canada.
Ottawa’s role as a national centre for government, research, and innovation makes it the ideal setting to explore how both countries are addressing shared challenges in security, sustainable energy, and next-generation technologies. By convening leaders and innovators in these sectors, SCID25 will spotlight the latest breakthroughs, foster new partnerships, and highlight the critical importance of cross-border collaboration in building a safer, greener, and more technologically advanced future.
