As two like-minded nations with a long-standing partnership in innovation, Sweden and Canada are uniquely positioned to deepen collaboration in today’s increasingly complex global landscape.
Sweden Canada Innovation Days (SCID) is the flagship annual event of the Sweden Canada Innovation Initiative (SCII), a collaborative network of government and industry partners, locally administered by Business Sweden and funded by Vinnova and the Swedish Energy Agency, dedicated to advancing innovation and co-creation between Sweden and Canada.
The initiative began in 2018 with a small but pivotal innovation seminar in Montréal, organized by Vinnova, Business Sweden, and the Embassy of Sweden, and supported by leading Swedish companies including Saab, Ericsson, Volvo, and ABB. The overwhelmingly positive response led to the official launch of the initiative in 2019, with the inaugural Sweden Canada Innovation Days bringing together leaders from industry, academia, and government to focus on autonomous systems, mining, forestry, and the power of cross-sector matchmaking.
Now in its seventh edition, Sweden Canada Innovation Days has grown into a cornerstone event for the innovation communities of both countries. Each year, the event has expanded in scope and ambition—bringing together a diverse mix of startups, established companies, researchers, and policymakers, serving as a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange, matchmaking, and the launch of new collaborative projects.
Each year, Sweden Canada Innovation Days revolves around the core theme of “Driving the Green Transition,” ensuring every edition spotlights the urgent need for sustainable innovation and climate action. The event typically alternates between Toronto and Montréal, reflecting the strong ties across Canada’s innovation hubs. With annually rotating spotlight sectors, the program highlights timely challenges, successes, and opportunities in industries where Sweden and Canada share unique synergies—continually bringing new perspectives and showcasing the depth of expertise and partnership potential.
Sweden Canada Innovation Days 2026 will be hosted in Toronto—Canada’s leading hub for advanced manufacturing, clean technology, and financial innovation. This year’s focus on the battery value chain and advanced materials reflects both the strategic strengths of the host region and the evolving partnership between Sweden and Canada in driving the green transition.
Toronto’s role as a gateway to North America’s industrial base, combined with its proximity to Ontario’s rapidly growing battery and EV ecosystem, makes it an ideal setting to explore how both countries are scaling sustainable supply chains and accelerating innovation in materials and manufacturing. By convening leaders and innovators across the battery value chain—from raw materials and processing to technology development and recycling—SCID26 will showcase cutting-edge solutions, foster new partnerships, and underscore the importance of cross-border collaboration in building a resilient, low-carbon industrial future.
