Recirculation of phosphorus - Planetary boundaries Video on demand

Sunday December 10, 2023 12:00 - 12:40 +04 Swedish Pavilion

Partner: Ragn-Sells

The challenge with the biochemical flows and especially phosphorus will be in focus. Phosphorus and nitrogen problems worse than previously thought, new research shows (ragnsells.com)

A first plant will be built in Helsingborg and we will demonstrate the potential to already now produce high quality recirculated phosphorus products.

Phosphorus that today is used comes from phosphate rock, which is mined. In addition to the large climate impact of this method, most of the world’s known reserves are polluted with significant amounts of cadmium and uranium meaning that the total planetary footprint is significant. Still, the majority of phosphorus-rich sewage sludge is landfilled and wasted. The Ash2Phos technology extracts more than 90 percent of the phosphorus from incinerated sludge, getting rid of any pollutants.

A recording with Elizabeth Kolbert (Pulitzer prize laureate 2015) and Pär Larshans named “The phosphours paradox” – from the 18th of September. The Phosphorus Paradox - Kaj Embren, demonstrates the need and the potential. Kolbert did write an article about the challenge in The New Yorker Phosphorus Saved Our Way of Life—and Now Threatens to End It | The New Yorker
