Sustainable Heating & Cooling in Practice: Insights from Southern Sweden on District Heating, Waste Heat, Policy, and Digitalisation
9-10 September 2025, Lund
The Swedish Energy Agency and the Sustainable Heating and Cooling by Sweden platform, in collaboration with SweHeat & Cooling and Business Sweden are organising a study tour to Lund on the 9-10th of September 2025 to explore Sweden's success strategies and best practices within heating and cooling.
Sweden stands as a global leader in the transition to fossil-free heating and cooling. Today, there are less than 2% fossil fuel in the entire building heating sector, partially originating from plastics in waste incineration (CHP). Most individual oil and gas boilers have been replaced by district heating or heat pumps. District heating supplies nearly 60% of the market, operating in a deregulated environment in terms of pricing and ownership and with no mandatory connection requirements.
What to expect
- Site Visits to Leading Energy Projects:
- Kraftringen, a municipally owned energy company based in Lund, will be the primary host. The company operates jointly with two other energy companies, a regional district heating (DH) network, spanning over 60 kilometres between the cities, with thousands km of pope trenches and integrating more than 30 production plants. Participants will gain insights into Kraftringen’s expertise in bio combined heat and power (CHP) generation, large-scale thermal energy storage (TES), heat reuse and the world’s largest low-temperature district heating system (4GDH) in the Brunnshög district.
- E.ON ectogrid at Medicon Village, a life science hub within Lund's Ideon Science District, where participants will learn about innovative ESCO solutions for delivering a range of balanced heating and cooling services (5GDHC).
- Exclusive workshops and keynote sessions with Swedish utilities and technology providers to exchange best practices and discuss strategies for accelerating the transition to sustainable heating and cooling.
- More information on the preliminary agenda can be found here.
Practicalities
- A cost-based participation fee at 430 EUR will be charged for hotel, breakfast, dinner, conference and logistics on site. Each participant is responsible to organise the travel from and to Lund.
- Registration deadline for joining the study tour is the 20 August 2025. Please note that spots are limited and final confirmation of participation is subject to approval from the organisers.
